The World One Health Congress (WOHC) is the world's premier Congress to advance the One Health agenda and the 7th WOHC 2022 is hosted by SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute (SDGHI) in Singapore!

The theme is Integrating Science, Policy and Clinical Practice: A One Health Imperative Post-COVID-19 and to capture the multifaceted One Health paradigm, the WOHC 2022 brings together five distinct tracks over 5 days: One Health Science, Pandemic Preparedness and Health Systems Resilience, Policy, Environment and Biosecurity, Impact on and Innovations in Clinical Practice, and Antimicrobial Resistance.

Yann presented the work Jia Yee and Dalong are doing (of course, with the help of the team) for the St. John’s Island Resistome (SIR) project: “The St. John’s Island Resistome (SIR) project - a tractable microcosm of antibiotic resistance transmission across One Health domains in Singapore” on culture-enriched metagenomics, which we have got some very interesting preliminary data.

The congress was filled with broad-spectrum research talks from delegates all-around the world, for example, surveillance of zoonosis diseases such as SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), One Health approach to integrated AMR surveillance and latest scientific advances on One Health.

Jia Yee, Deborah and Haripriya volunteered to help with the Congress and enjoyed the Congress! Good to have in-person conference after the pandemic (and hopefully more to come)!

Volunteer recruitment for St. John's Island resistome project

  • Ola Beach Club @ Sentosa (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Have you ever accidentally swallowed some seawater while enjoying activities in Singapore’s beaches? Research has shown that pathogenic bacteria lurk in seawater, and may have an effect on your body! We are studying this phenomenon to understand the transmission of antibiotic resistance from the environment to humans.

We are looking for 240 volunteers for this study.

We are setting up a booth by the beach at Ola Beach Club @ Sentosa to recruit as many volunteers as possible.

All we ask is for you to fill a short survey and give us a single poop sample!

An attractive reimbursement of $50 will be provided for your participation.

Come and see us there!

Alternatively, please email or call hsivan29@nus.edu.sg, HP: 97660356 (Ms. Haripriya) to indicate your interest.

We do actively looking for volunteers, please do contact us even if you can’t go there or missed the event!

Some photos of Evelyn, Deborah and Haripriya working (also enjoying?) hard at the beach!

Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) celebrates the 10th anniversary at Capella Hotel on Sentosa. As part of SCELSE, all of us joined the event to celebrate SCELSE’s more than a decade of research excellence in biofilm and microbiome science and engineering!

It was a memorable event in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic with informative scientific sessions, engaging exhibits and poster sessions!

SCELSE has been great in the past 10 years and more 10 years to come!

Infectious Diseases Symposium 2021

Our first Infectious Diseases Symposium as a lab! Look at us in our CREW T-SHIRT!!! (Design inspired by Dr Yann’s new card game)

It certainly was good to gather (with social distancing of course!) and hear about each other’s research areas. We covered a wide range of public health issues and research methodologies, including vector control in dengue endemic settings like Singapore.

Dr Yann was the main organiser for this event, and our own lab members — Dalong and Jia Yee — also presented on Single-gene long-read sequencing using Escherichia coli illuminates strain dynamics in the human intestinal microbiome and Influence of inconsistent wastewater management on waterborne AMR spread in sub-urban Malaysia respectively.

This face-to-face interaction over good food from Tiong Bahru Bakery was much needed! :) Thank you to all our participants for staying throughout the event! We hope to have more of such gatherings soon!

[RESEARCH SEMINAR] The St. John’s Island Resistome Project: From People to the Ocean

Abstract: Although antibiotic resistance in bacteria has been extensively studied functionally in the laboratory and with regard to its presence in various environments, there are still major gaps in our understanding of transmission pathways across the One Health domains (people, animals and the environment). Through tracking bacterial pathogens and resistance genes from polluted harbours to coral reefs, we have developed various molecular techniques to detect and quantify them in nature and humans alike. Here, we present our plan to use an epidemiological approach to track transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria through the St. John’s Island coastal ecosystem, including its human inhabitants. This will provide a clear and quantitative picture of the resistome and its transmission pathways in a protected marine environment within Singapore and evaluate the risk posed by antibiotic resistant organisms to seawater users. This is a collective effort, which will require help from the Singapore marine science community.

Speaker: Dr. Yann Felix Boucher, Associate Professor Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore & Principal Research Fellow, Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE)

Hosted by: Dr. Theresa Su
