Aw Zhi Jie Vanessa

August 2021 - July 2022

Vanessa’s project focus on human microbiome pipeline development to grow anerobic bacteria from human stool. Vanessa continues to do Medicine programme as her postgraduate study in July 2022 at Duke-NUS.

Nora Hussain

September 2017 - April 2020

Nora’s MSc project investigated type VI secretion system interactions within an environmental population of Vibrio cholerae. Nora begins her PhD in Fall 2020 with Dr. James Stafford at the University of Alberta.

Kevin Liang

September 2017 - December 2019

Kevin established a core genome multilocus sequence typing scheme for Vibrio cholerae by analyzing over 900 whole-genome sequences. He also phylogenomically reevaluated the taxonomy of the Rhodobacteraceae family during his MSc. Kevin begins his PhD doing rotations in the Quantitative Life Sciences Department at McGill in Fall 2020.

Tania Nasreen

September 2012 - July 2019

Tania’s PhD thesis involved quantifying toxigenic and non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio metoecus through qPCR. She is now working as a Research Associate in Dr. Nicholas Ashbolt’s lab at the University of Alberta.

William Booth

May 2018 - April 2019

Will’s BIOL 398 and 498 projects consisted of competing environmental Vibrio cholerae strains against the clinical V. cholerae V52 strain.

Ben Jones

July 2017 - April 2018

For his BIOL 398 and 499 projects, Ben explored salt tolerance ranges of globally-isolated Vibrio cholerae on a strain level.

Fabini Orata

September 2012 - December 2017

Fabini studied the extent of gene exchange by horizontal gene transfer in closely-related bacteria, Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio metoecus, in addition to defining boundaries for the circumscription of higher taxonomic ranks (i.e., family and genus) using genomics. After finishing with a PhD from the Boucher Lab, Fabini has gone on to work with Dr. Lisa Stein and Dr. Dominic Sauvageau as a Postdoc at the University of Alberta.

Paul Kirchberger

May 2012 - April 2017

Paul studied the diversity and niche adaptation of non-clinical strains of Vibrio cholerae. After being the first PhD candidate to graduate from the Boucher Lab, Paul is now a Postdoc fellow in the lab of Dr. Howard Ochman at the University of Texas in Austin.

Sarim Mirza

July 2016 - April 2017

Sarim was a BIOL 498 and 499 student in the Boucher Lab, where he worked on the molecular characterization of environmental strains of Vibrio vulnificus isolated from various regions of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Imogen Sellman

September 2014 - April 2015

Imogen helped characterize the diversity of Vibrio cholerae strains isolated from the Ganges Delta of Bangladesh for her BIOL 499 project.

Jed Barlow

June 2011 - December 2014

Jed completed his BIOL 299, 398, and 498 projects in the Boucher Lab, where he developed various plugins for DNA sequence analyses for Geneious and the CLC Genomics Workbench.

Malcena Stalker

September 2013 - April 2014

Malcena completed her BIOL 499 project in the Boucher Lab, conducting molecular analysis of Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio metoecus in natural populations.

May 2013 - April 2014

Guang Wei worked on the identification, culturing, and preservation of marine bacteria for his BIOL 398 and 499 projects.

Chantal Magnan

January 2012 - April 2013

For her BIOL 498 project, Chantal worked on the phylogenetic comparisons of several Vibrio cholerae strains. She then sequenced and analyzed the whole genome of a hypermutator V. cholerae strain from Bangladesh for her BIOL 499 project.

Lauren Bradford

May 2011 - August 2011

As an undergraduate researcher in the Boucher Lab, Lauren performed high-throughput PCR and sequencing of various genes from multiple environmental Vibrio cholerae strains to study horizontal gene transfer.

Lauryn Pounder

May 2011 - August 2011

Lauryn worked on developing a screening protocol for hypermutator strains of Vibrio cholerae using antibiotics during her summer stint in the lab.

Alexis Fischer

September 2010 - May 2011

Alexis was vital in the establishment of the Boucher Lab. She came to the University of Alberta as a Research Technician after working with Yan at MIT.
